This Is How It Started

In the past, thousands of years ago in Satya Yuga’s time, the realm of demons was led by the king Hiranya Kashyap. The demon king had created a miserable life for everyone in Earth and caused much troubles for everyone across the globe. He was so confident that was he asked for the blessing of Lord Brahma after several years of prayer and penance that was granted to him. The blessing was that Hiranya Kashyap would niet be killed man or woman and not by an animal or birds, neither during the day nor at night, and not with an unnatural weapon or hand weapon, neither in his palace, nor outside of his palace, and lastly not by God or the demon.

Once he was granted this blessing, it felt like he had been immortalized and he believed that he was the all-powerful. He therefore ordered all within the kingdom to cease worshiping God Shri Hari Vishnu and start worshipping him instead. He also said those who would refuse to accept the new worship will be executed.

The Fear Of Hiranyakashyap

Everybody in the kingdom began to worship him out from fear of the death. But Hiranyakashyap’s personal child, Prahlad was a sincere worshiper of Lord Vishnu He kept on worshipping the Lord Shri Hari Vishnu against the directives by his father. This angered Hiranyakashyap and he opted to kill Prahlad his son, killed. But, Prahlad continued to worship the god Lord Vishnu and to chant”Hari. “Hari.”

This Why Holika Dahan Is Celebrated

Hiranyakashyap attempted to get Prahlad put in an encampment full of snakes, had his head crushed on by an elephant and also attempted to get him thrown off a mountain that is today referred to as Dikoli Parvat. However, each time Prahlad was saved through the grace by the Lord Shri Hari Vishnu. In the end, nothing worked. Hiranyakashyap sought his sister Holika.

In the past, she received a blessing that rendered her invincible to fire. Hiranyakashyap requested that she place Prahlad on her lap, and then lie on a heap of wood that was burning, in an attempt to smudge Prahlad alive. The event happened, Prahlad lived, but Holika, Hiranyakashyap’s sister, was burned alive in the fires. Since then, people all over India who worship Holika Mata have done the Holika Dahan.

The Defeat Of Hiranyakashyap

If all else fails, Hiranyakashyap tried to kill Prahlad alone and then ordered Prahlad to summon His Lord Shri Vishnu to help Prahlad. As he was about to take him down and take him to the temple, Lord Shri Vishnu’s avatar Lord Narasimha was able to break free from an edifice. Lord Vishnu used this incarnation to eliminate Hiranyakashyap but without denying the boon that Lord Brahma had granted him.

As per the conditions of the boon that Lord Narsimha was neither a human or animal, neither was he an animal, nor a God or animal. Lord Narasimha was dragged Hiranyakashyap into the palace’s entryway which meant he wasn’t either outside or inside, and the time he was killed was the time when the day and night were in complete harmony, therefore it was neither a night or night. Finally, the Lord Narasimha killed him using his claws which did not constitute a weapon. Since then it has been a tradition that Lord Narasimha as well as Lord Shri Vishnu are honored during the festival of Phalgun Purnima.
